The blisters on my thumb and forefinger are a stinging reminder of my first gig in a while. This January I took the month off touring. A chance to get ‘back to normality’, a chance to re acquaint myself with that Friday feeling, routines, two for one deals, rain, rush hour in the commuter belt with it’s four o clock suburban horizon less sunsets. My recent brief glimpses of daytime TV as I wonder to kitchen for another giant mug of tea fill me with horror.( My house mate and friend Gus leaves the TV on to keep Maggie the house cat company when he’s out. She has a keen interest in wildlife programs, sleeping in my chair and in certain feline intellectual circles is considered one of leading authorities on budget Australian soap operas.)
There are many people for whom television is a lifeline, an educator, a companion and something we can all have in common but I can’t help but think that the massive expansion in channels we’ve encountered in recent years has affected the quality of programs dramatically and a flood of dire, mind numbing shows are attempting to fill an ever widening void. (Excuse me while I boil the kettle, moan some more, put on my slippers and turn up radio four) but……..Britain seems OBSESSED with dancing programs at the moment, orange looking people made of spray tan and candle wax melting under studio lights, dressed up in gold foil like coffee flavoured sweets with sparkling nuclear teeth and impossible hair being judged by cash cow pop stars and coffin dodging larger than afterlife cronies. Strictly NO!
